Harmonic Charts

What harmonic charts reveal, how to select a harmonic number, what each common harmonic means, and how to read the chart.

A harmonic chart multiplies each planet's zodiac longitude by a chosen integer and plots the result, amplifying angular relationships that are difficult to spot in a standard natal chart. This technique brings hidden aspect patterns and latent talents into clear view.

"Harmonic" borrows from the concept of overtones in music. Just as overtones reveal vibration patterns contained within a fundamental note, harmonic charts reveal patterns embedded in the natal chart.

What Are Harmonic Charts

In a standard natal chart, major aspects - conjunction, square, trine, and so on - receive the most attention. Subtler divisions such as quintiles (5th harmonic) and septiles (7th harmonic) are easy to overlook.

A harmonic chart recalculates each planet's position by multiplying its longitude by the harmonic number and taking the remainder after dividing by 360 degrees. Planets that share the targeted angular relationship in the natal chart appear as conjunctions in the harmonic chart, making the pattern immediately visible.

How to Access

You can open a harmonic chart from the birth data page.

  1. Navigate to your birth data page and display a chart
  2. Open the chart type dropdown menu
  3. Select "Harmonic Chart"
  4. Choose a harmonic number

Choosing a Harmonic Number

HOSHIDOU supports harmonic numbers from 2 through 12. The chart recalculates instantly each time you change the number.

Different numbers highlight different aspect families. Choose the number that matches what you want to investigate.

Common Harmonics and Their Meanings

Each harmonic number carries a distinct theme. The table below lists the most frequently used numbers.

NumberAspect highlightedTheme
H2Opposition (180 degrees)Polarity, tension and integration
H4Square (90 degrees)Drive, conflict, growth through challenge
H5Quintile (72 degrees)Creativity, talent, unique self-expression
H7Septile (approx. 51.4 degrees)Inspiration, intuition, mystical impulse
H8Semi-square (45 degrees)Transformation, growth through crisis
H9Novile (40 degrees)Spirituality, soul maturity, inner awakening
H12Semi-sextile (30 degrees)Subtle adjustment, latent ability
H5 (creativity) and H7 (inspiration) are especially useful when exploring artistic talent and creative potential.

Reading the Chart

The primary focus in a harmonic chart is the conjunction (0 degrees). Planets that formed the targeted angular relationship in the natal chart now appear conjunct.

  • Tight conjunctions - Indicate a strong expression of the harmonic's theme
  • Multi-planet clusters - Suggest compound talent or energy around that theme
  • Aspect patterns - Grand trines, T-squares, and other configurations that appear in the harmonic chart are also meaningful

Table Views and Tooltips

Harmonic charts support table views including the planet table and aspect matrix. Hover over (or tap) any planet glyph to see a tooltip showing the harmonic-adjusted degree.

Tooltip content can be customized in Tooltip Settings.

Exporting the Chart

You can export your harmonic chart as an image or PDF. For instructions and supported formats, see Chart Export.
