Composite Chart

How to create a midpoint chart that represents the relationship itself.

A composite chart is a single chart that represents a relationship as its own entity. It is created by calculating the midpoints between two people's planetary positions, producing one unified horoscope for the partnership rather than for either individual. This makes it a powerful tool for understanding the core nature, themes, and direction of any relationship.

Composite chart overview

How Midpoints Are Calculated

Each planet in the composite chart is placed at the averaged position of that same planet in both people's natal charts. For example, if Person A's Sun is at 10 degrees Aries and Person B's Sun is at 20 degrees Aries, the composite Sun lands at 15 degrees Aries.

This calculation is applied to every planet and sensitive point in both charts. The resulting set of midpoints is then plotted onto a single wheel, giving the relationship its own complete horoscope with signs, houses, and aspects.

Choosing a Partner

To create a composite chart, you need birth data for two people. The partner selection screen uses the same interface as the synastry chart - simply pick two entries from your saved birth data list and the composite chart is generated instantly.

Both people must have registered birth data before you can create a composite chart. For help adding birth data, see Managing Birth Data.

How It Differs from Synastry

Both synastry and composite charts analyze relationships, but they approach the task from different angles.

  • Synastry - Overlays two natal charts on top of each other. It reveals how each person's planets interact with the other's houses and aspects, showing the dynamic between the two individuals.
  • Composite - Merges two natal charts into a single chart by averaging every planetary position. It treats the relationship as a third entity with its own personality, showing what the relationship itself is like.

Where synastry highlights the push-and-pull between two people, the composite chart describes the relationship as a whole. Using both methods together gives you a more complete picture.

Reading the Chart

You can read a composite chart exactly the way you would read a regular natal chart. Signs, houses, and aspects all carry their usual meanings - the only difference is that they describe the relationship rather than a single person.

  • Composite Sun - Represents the central theme and purpose of the relationship.
  • Composite Moon - Reflects the emotional tone and shared needs when the two people are together.
  • Composite aspects - Reveal the internal energy dynamics, strengths, and challenges the relationship carries.

House placements show which areas of life the relationship expresses itself through most strongly. For instance, a composite Sun in the 7th house points to a partnership where the relationship itself takes centre stage.
