Draconic Chart

What the draconic chart is, how it differs from the tropical natal chart, soul-level interpretation, and how to access it.

A draconic chart recalculates the natal chart so that the North Node sits at 0 degrees Aries, shifting every other planet accordingly. It offers a complementary lens to the standard tropical chart, focusing on soul-level themes and karmic patterns.

"Draconic" comes from the Latin word "draco" (dragon), a reference to the North Node's traditional name - the Dragon's Head.

What Is a Draconic Chart

In a standard tropical chart, planetary positions are measured from the vernal equinox (0 degrees Aries). A draconic chart replaces that reference point with the North Node.

Each planet's longitude is recalculated by subtracting the North Node's longitude, producing a new set of sign placements. The result is a chart where every position is anchored to the nodal axis - the axis of soul growth and karmic direction.

How It Differs from the Tropical Chart

The tropical and draconic charts use the same planets but operate in different coordinate frames.

AspectTropicalDraconic
Reference pointVernal equinox (0 degrees Aries)North Node
PerspectivePresent-life personality and behaviorSoul essence and karmic tendencies
AspectsIdenticalIdentical (angles between planets do not change)
Sign placementsDifferentDifferent
Because the angular relationships between planets remain unchanged, the draconic chart produces the same aspects as the tropical chart. Only the sign placements differ.

Soul-Level Interpretation

The draconic chart is sometimes called "the chart of the soul." While the natal chart reflects your present-life personality and habits, the draconic chart is said to reveal deeper soul memories and essential desires.

Focus on these points to uncover karmic themes.

  • Draconic Sun sign - Suggests the direction the soul fundamentally strives toward
  • Draconic Moon sign - Reflects the soul's emotional memory and core needs
  • Comparison with tropical placements - Differences between the two charts highlight the gap between your present-life self and your soul-level self

How to Access

You can open a draconic chart from the birth data page.

  1. Navigate to your birth data page and display a chart
  2. Open the chart type dropdown menu
  3. Select "Draconic Chart"

The chart is calculated and displayed immediately.

Reading the Chart

Reading a draconic chart follows the same principles as reading a natal chart. Sign meanings and house interpretations apply as usual, but the frame of reference shifts to soul-level themes.

Placing the tropical natal chart side by side with the draconic chart makes it easier to see where your present-life personality aligns with - or diverges from - your soul essence. You can view the natal chart via Single Wheel.

Table Views and Tooltips

Draconic charts support table views including the planet table, aspect matrix, element and modality distribution, and house cusp table. Hover over (or tap) any planet glyph to see a tooltip showing the draconic-adjusted degree.

Tooltip content can be customized in Tooltip Settings.

Exporting the Chart

You can export your draconic chart as an image or PDF. For instructions and supported formats, see Chart Export.
