The moment the Sun returns
A solar return is the exact moment when the moving Sun reaches the same zodiacal position it held at your birth. It happens once a year, near your birthday. A chart cast for that moment is called a solar return chart.
The Sun returns to the same degree every year, while the Moon and other planets occupy new positions. The chart therefore changes from one birthday to the next. The houses containing clusters of planets and the signs receiving emphasis can suggest where attention may naturally gather during the coming year.
Read it as a starting point
A solar return is most useful as a map for reflection. It cannot tell you exactly what will happen. It can show which parts of life are more brightly lit and where deliberate attention may meet the year’s current.
If planets collect in the area connected with work and public responsibility, you might prepare for a more outward-facing year. If the home and inner-life area is emphasized, tending the foundation may deserve more time. The chart stays on the desk as an orientation, not as a test of whether a prediction came true.
